Tesla is preparing another large charging facility in Austin that could become an important part of its upcoming Cybercab robotaxi. The construction plans for a new Supercharger at 405 E. St. Elmo Road in Austin show the Supercharger project will have two phases. The first phase includes 48 V4 Supercharger posts, while phase 2 calls for equipment that can support 80 wireless chargers.
The timing is particularly interesting as Tesla prepares for its upcoming Cybercab launch event.
Tesla Is Converting an Existing Logistics Lot
Google Street View imagery shows Tesla already using the property as a logistics area, including signage identifying it as a Tesla transporter drop-off and pickup location.
The equipment lists 12 V3.5 Supercharger cabinets feeding 48 V4 Supercharger posts in the initial phase.
The drawings describe the work as an upgrade to the existing Tesla parking lot. Tesla plans to install charging posts, transformers, lighting, security cameras, and Wi-Fi access points.
Tesla appears to have bought what looks like a storage unit and the neighboring lot, transformed it into a logistics area, and is now converting it into a Supercharger. You can see the difference before and after Tesla bought both lots.
Adds 80 Wireless Chargers
The most interesting part is in the site plan’s notes. Tesla specifies a V4 charging cabinet intended to support 80 wireless chargers in phase 2.
While the Cybercab includes a charging port at the rear bumper, Tesla plans for the vehicle to eventually use wireless charging exclusively.
Tesla can support its current Model Y Robotaxi fleet and early Cybercabs with V4 posts while preparing the site for automated charging later.
Cybercab Launch Is Getting Close
The charging plans surface just as Tesla has officially confirmed a Cybercab launch event. Tesla is giving current Robotaxi riders a chance to attend the Cybercab event, with qualifying rides running through August 23 and winners scheduled to be announced August 25. Tesla has not yet announced the event’s date or location, but it’s speculated to occur in late August or early September in Austin, Texas.
