Tesla Patent Helps Keep FSD Cameras Clear by Preventing Windshield Haze

Tesla has published a patent application they hope will improve the off-gassing issue with the front camera housing. The patent describes incorporating VOC-absorbing material directly into the camera housing that surrounds the vehicle’s front cameras.

The goal is to capture chemicals that are inside the plastic camera housing over years. Since they have no where to escape, they end up condensing on the windshield and interfere with camera visibility.

Already Acknowledged the Problem

Tesla owners can encounter camera visibility warnings even when the outside of the windshield is clean. A hazy film can accumulate on the interior glass directly in front of the forward-facing cameras, requiring removal of the rearview mirror and camera housing to properly clean it. Tesla has offered this cleaning service for roughly $50 to $89 in the U.S., depending on the model.

In September 2025, Elon Musk called simplifying front-camera cleaning a “major area of focus” for Tesla. At the time, we discussed easier-to-remove housings and improved ventilation as possible solutions. Tesla did not reveal what approach it was developing.

Tesla’s VOC-Absorbing Parts

Tesla’s patent looks to prevent the buildup rather than simply making it easier to clean.

Plastics, adhesives and other cabin materials can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and semi-volatile organic compounds. Tesla says these substances can condense on the windshield and form a haze that degrades camera visibility.

Tesla proposes manufacturing nearby plastic components from polypropylene containing microporous crystalline aluminosilicate particles. These zeolite-like particles have microscopic pores capable of attracting and trapping VOC molecules.

In some examples, they account for roughly 70% of the material by weight. Tesla describes pore sizes of approximately 3 to 10 angstroms, with different sizes used to capture different compounds.

The Camera Housing

Rather than coating the outside of parts with the VOC-absorbing amterial, Tesla describes distributing the absorbent particles throughout the plastic. This would allow the components to continue capturing VOCs over time.

The patent does not confirm this technology is coming to production vehicles, but the patent means that Tesla is at least considering the idea. This passive approach could address the front-camera contamination problem Musk previously said Tesla was focused on solving.
