Tesla Cybercab Spotted Testing Multi-Color RGB Light Bar

Tesla’s dedicated autonomous vehicle is making regular public appearances as fleet testing ramps up ahead of next week's official launch event. The two-seater Cybercab, built from the ground up without a steering wheel or pedals to serve as the foundation of Tesla’s Robotaxi network, has been spotted showing off some pretty colorful sides.

A video shared on X by @artsimage captured multiple Cybercab prototypes cruising through city streets while displaying shifting colors across their front lighting strip. In the footage, one Cybercab displays a vivid amber-orange glow across its hood line, while a second unit passing right behind it shows off an emerald green hue.

The sighting comes after Tesla recently confirmed the Cybercab launch event date for September 3. Earlier this month, the Cybercab’s front light bar was confirmed to be RGB after it appeared with red, white, and blue lighting during a tech showcase, and recent sightings even gave us a look at the vehicle’s split-screen UI.

Practical Uses and Regulatory Limits for Color-Changing Lights

A programmable multi-color light bar is more than just a party trick — it could help solve real-world ride-hailing headaches.

When hundreds (or thousands, if Tesla has anything to say about it) of identical gold Cybercabs flood downtown pickup hubs, finding your specific vehicle in a crowd could get chaotic. Instead of squinting to read a license plate, the Robotaxi app could simply instruct a passenger to look for the car with a turquoise or purple light bar. The lighting could also communicate ride status, turning green when available or red when occupied. If the LEDs are individually addressable, the bar could even show charging progress as the vehicles top up at Tesla’s planned Cybercab hubs or display animated sweeps for specific functions.

However, automotive lighting regulations place strict guardrails on forward-facing colors on public roads. While white and amber are standard for driving, colors like red or blue could be mistaken for emergency vehicles. Because of this, full-spectrum RGB effects may be limited to when the Cybercab is parked, pulling over for passenger entry, or navigating private pickup lots.

Reflective Night Branding for Quick Identification

Beyond active lighting, the Cybercab’s nighttime visibility is getting extra help from reflective exterior details. Sharing photos on X, @AdanGuajardo highlighted the vehicle’s illuminated badging.

The images show the stylized Cybercab wordmark applied along the side doors and across the rear glass. Under direct headlight beams, the decals glow brightly in the dark. It’s not like the gold two-seater is hard to spot with its unique design and futuristic silhouette, but high-visibility reflective graphics make spotting your approaching ride effortless on poorly lit streets.

With the Cybercab’s official reveal just around the corner, these functional exterior touches show how Tesla is refining the small details for the next generation of its vehicles.
