Austrian Company Builds Automated NACS Charging Dock for Tesla Robotaxis

Without human drivers behind the wheel, robotaxis must be able to replenish their batteries without manual intervention. Automating the charging process is one of the final hurdles standing between autonomous vehicles and fully hands-free fleet operations, and while Tesla is yet to unveil its own solution officially, one Austrian company has beaten it to the punch.

A video shared on X by @Chris_01___ showcases a passive conductive docking system developed by Austrian vehicle charging brand Volterio, showing a Model Y reversing directly into a ground-mounted Supercharger port. Here’s how the system was described:

“An automated, passive NACS-docking solution, whereas the Robotaxi just reverses onto the docking station would cost a fraction of a wireless system, does 250 kW and the manual charging would still remain. Compensates laterally +/- 100 mm misalignment.”

In the demonstration, the vehicle backs into a parking bay where an automated ground probe connects to a custom port installed in place of the Model Y’s rear tow hitch.

Passive Conductive Docking vs. Inductive Charging Pads

For driverless fleets, a passive docking system solves several practical challenges. Because robotaxis have no need for a trailer hitch, repurposing the rear receiver space provides a clean, protected connection point. The vehicle simply reverses itself over a parking spot until the dock engages, delivering up to 250 kW of DC fast charging without the need for human intervention or moving robotic arms.

While third-party firms explore mechanical docks, Tesla is taking a different route by committing entirely to inductive wireless charging pads.

Tesla is already building massive charging hubs for its Robotaxi fleet as it prepares to start deploying the purpose-built Cybercab, including one in Austin that features 80 wireless chargers in the site plans. Regulators have also signed off on the tech, with Tesla receiving FCC approval for wireless Cybercab charging earlier this year.

Tesla is yet to debut its wireless charging tech publicly, so it remains shrouded in question marks. On the efficiency front, however, Tesla previously stated its in-house inductive system achieves “well above 90%” efficiency, dispelling concerns over the massive energy losses that are typical of most wireless charging solutions today.

Ramping Fleet Tech Ahead of the Cybercab Reveal

The appearance of alternative automated charging setups comes during a massive week for Tesla's autonomous ambitions. Tesla has already started adding Cybercabs to its Robotaxi fleet ahead of the official Cybercab launch event this Thursday in Austin. The first public Cybcercab rides are widely expected to take place later this week.

Although Tesla has been testing steering wheel-less Cybercabs on public roads for months now, production units still feature a hidden NACS charge port for wired charging. Initial commercial deployments will likely also rely on manual plug-ins before wireless hubs go live.

Whether through passive mechanical docking or high-efficiency wireless pads, removing cables remains key to keeping driverless fleets running around the clock without human intervention.
