The moment autonomous driving enthusiasts have been waiting for is finally here. After months of public testing and speculation, Tesla is preparing to officially take the wraps off its dedicated Cybercab robotaxi.

The Cybercab represents the next phase of Tesla’s autonomous ambitions. Designed from scratch as a purpose-built two-seater, the vehicle completely ditches the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, brake pedal, and any other form of traditional controls. It’s built to serve as the scalable backbone of Tesla’s commercial Robotaxi fleet, eventually replacing the modified Model Y vehicles currently handling driverless rides.

Tesla teased the event for months before revealing last month that it would take place in Austin. Days later, Tesla confirmed the September 3 Cybercab event date and sent invites to attendees. It even ran a sweepstakes that gave Robotaxi riders a chance to win an invite to the event.

Event Time

The launch presentation is scheduled to begin today, Thursday, September 3, at 4:45 p.m. CDT in downtown Austin, Texas.

How to Watch

Tesla typically live streams all of its major unveilings, and we expect today’s presentation to follow suit. However, Tesla hasn’t shared an official stream link ahead of time.

Given the strict embargo surrounding this launch, the event feels noticeably more secretive than past vehicle debuts. We’ll update this article with a live stream link as soon as one becomes available.

Update: It looks like Tesla is not going to stream tonight’s event as they have yet to share a link to the official stream. Tesla typically shares it a couple hours before the event. If anything changes, we’ll be sure to post it here.

Update 2: The event has now started and unfortunately it is not being streamed. If Tesla posts a video or highlights after the event concludes, we’ll post it here. We’ll have a recap of any details, videos and photos we can get our hands on tomorrow.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Tesla updated its Robotaxi app earlier today with additional features and support for the Cybercab.

Update 3: While Tesla only live-streamed the event to employees, we now have a video of the keynote.

What to Expect

Anticipation kicked into high gear after James Bickford, Tesla’s Director of Global Sales for Residential Energy Products, posted a teaser on X stating that "it's going to be an exciting 48 hours." With the main stage presentation likely lasting only a few hours at best, the teaser suggests Tesla could have more surprises planned over the coming days.

We expect the Cybercab to officially join the commercial Robotaxi fleet during or immediately following the event. A recent Robotaxi app update rolled out support for Cybercab rides in Austin, confirming that the two-seater is ready for passenger duty.

Tesla has already been testing steering wheel-less production Cybercabs in Austin for months, so attendees will almost certainly receive demo rides around downtown Austin, marking the first public passenger trips in the vehicle.

Expect the presentation to focus heavily on fleet economics, operating cost per mile, charging logistics, and rider safety rather than typical consumer powertrain figures since the Cybercab isn’t really aimed at customers. While Tesla maintains that individual customers will eventually be able to purchase a Cybercab, retail pricing, consumer order books, and delivery timelines are unlikely to be detailed today, keeping the spotlight firmly on commercial ride-hailing.
