Tesla’s dedicated autonomous two-seater is already picking up paying passengers in Texas, but international fans are eager to know when driverless rides will expand across the Atlantic. Following the launch of public robotaxi operations stateside, Elon Musk dropped a hint that European cities might not have to wait indefinitely to hail a Cybercab.
The remark came on X after gaming streamer @rob2628 took a Cybercab ride in Austin, sharing his experience and expressing hope that it wouldn’t take years for the driverless two-seater to arrive in the European Union. “Hopefully soon in Europe too,” @elonmusk said in response to the post, offering an optimistic outlook on international expansion.
The teaser arrives just days after commercial Cybercab rides kicked off in Austin last week, following the purpose-built vehicle’s debut at Tesla’s official launch event last Thursday. Tesla recently started asking Cybercab riders how it could improve the experience, and a lot of the responses are bound to be about bringing the autonomous two-seater to other cities and countries.
Giga Berlin Assembly and a German Launch
Tesla could follow the same playbook it used in the U.S. to bring the Cybercab to Europe. Initial testing and the first public rides took place in Austin, right next to where Cybercabs are being produced at Giga Texas.
A European rollout would likely start in Germany for the exact same reason. Musk noted earlier this year that the Cybercab is the “most likely next major product” for Giga Berlin, with the Optimus robot potentially following. Tesla also filed construction permits for a new factory building and rail hub at Giga Berlin, the former of which could house modular “Unboxed” assembly lines for Cybercab production.
If Tesla follows its domestic rollout strategy, we could see production Cybercab units undergo validation on German roads first, followed by internal employee rides around the Grünheide plant before public commercial deployment.
Navigating European Regulatory Roadblocks
Expanding abroad involves clearing major legal hurdles. Tesla’s Robotaxi ride-hailing network remains confined to seven U.S. metro hubs for now and hasn’t even crossed the northern border into Canada yet.
More importantly, regulatory approvals for self-driving software across the European Union remain a complex puzzle. While six individual nations have approved Tesla’s consumer Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technology at the time of writing, some countries, including France and Sweden, are actively opposing the advanced driver assistance system and petitioning the EU to reject Tesla’s bid for bloc-wide approval.
Securing approval for supervised driver assistance is proving difficult enough, but winning approval for a vehicle that completely lacks a steering wheel or pedals presents an even steeper climb. Even so, Musk’s forward-looking comments show that Tesla views the Cybercab as a worldwide platform rather than a localized American experiment.
