Tesla's European Semi: Photos, Videos, and What's Different

Tesla's European Semi features camera-based side mirrors, revised headlights, an interior escape ladder, and a CCS2 adapter to meet strict European Union transport regulations.

Bringing an American heavy-duty electric commercial hauler across the Atlantic takes much more than swapping out the charge plug. Tesla announced last week that the Semi is officially coming to Europe, with customer deliveries starting in 2027. Production-intent prototypes are now on display at the IAA Transportation show in Hanover, Germany, revealing a slate of distinct revisions for the European version.

While the European Semi truck shares the same aggressive silhouette as its American counterpart, closer examination reveals that local transport regulations forced several practical hardware changes.

German Tesla podcaster @teslawelt and @TheEVuniverse, who were able to get hands-on with the Semi at the event, gave us our first look at the European variant and highlighted some of the core differences on X.

Camera Mirrors, Lighting Changes, and Aerodynamics

The most striking change on the European model is the complete absence of traditional side mirrors. While U.S. motor vehicle standards still mandate physical glass mirrors on heavy commercial trucks, European regulations allow manufacturers to replace bulky mirrors with digital cameras.

The European Semi features aerodynamic camera pods mounted on both sides of the cab, piping real-time feeds to digital displays inside the cockpit. In total, the truck is equipped with 10 external cameras providing a 360-degree view around the vehicle without blind spots. Beyond reducing wind drag, this extensive optical suite lays the groundwork for autonomy, with Tesla previously confirming that Full Self-Driving is in development for the Semi.

Lighting also received a bit of an overhaul. The continuous “Juniper” Model Y-like horizontal front lightbar featured on the U.S. Semi is missing because European commercial vehicle codes prohibit full-width illuminated strips on heavy trucks. Instead, the nose sports separated headlights styled similarly to the entry-level Model Y.

Up top, the two marker lights previously positioned near the top edge of the windshield have moved to the very roofline. Engineers also reshaped the upper roof slope slightly to align flush with standard European trailer heights, ensuring smooth airflow transition from cab to cargo box.

Another key difference brought on by European trucking regulations is that the rear wheels have covers on top.

Despite concerns that American cab dimensions would run afoul of European vehicle length caps, the cab retains the exact same length and width as the U.S. model. The Semi also takes advantage of Europe’s aerodynamic truck exemptions, which grant extra length allowance to curved, fuel-saving cab profiles hauling standard freight trailers.

Interior Emergency Ladders, Charging Adapters, and Nevada Production

Inside the cockpit, Tesla introduced safety equipment specifically mandated for European fleet certification. Most notably, an emergency escape ladder has been mounted to the cabin’s interior wall, providing the driver an escape route through the overhead hatch if the tractor ever tips onto its side in a collision.

The user interface also takes cues from Tesla’s passenger cars. Drivers control power seat adjustment directly from the touchscreens — mounted to either side of the centered driver’s seat — and the side windows can now be rolled down via onscreen toggles (a key difference from the original Semi that lets drivers easily reach out of the cabin at tolls, checkpoints, and such).

The twin displays act as a master control panel for everything from air suspension levels and the trailer latch to the tire pressure instrument and rear exterior work lights.

For public charging, the European Semi utilizes Tesla’s heavy-duty Megawatt Charging System (MCS) port, capable of drawing up to 1,200 kW (European version is rated for up to 800 kW) from dedicated Megachargers.

Because high-powered MCS stations are still early in their European deployment, Tesla developed an official CCS2-to-MCS adapter. This allows the truck to pull up to standard 350 kW CCS2 DC fast-charging plugs at existing stations while dedicated Megachargers are constructed.

When Tesla unveiled the refreshed Semi last fall, it split the platform into Standard and Long Range trims. Europe is getting the one with the lighter battery pack to start since it better matches European regional haul routes, but the Long Range version could also migrate across the Atlantic down the line.

Initial Semi units heading to Europe will be assembled in the U.S., at Tesla’s new factory in Sparks, Nevada. Tesla is set to host its Semi “Rollout” event at the dedicated Nevada factory later this month, where attendees will likely get an up-close look at the high-volume manufacturing lines that Priestley said are designed to churn out 1,000 trucks per week. Over time, European assembly will transition to Gigafactory Berlin, giving European fleet operators an aerodynamically optimized electric workhorse built right on the continent.
