Tesla’s AutoPilot is a great feature, far beyond what cruise control can provide. However it currently limits speeds to 5 MPH above the speed limit with no chance to override this unless you’re pressing down on the accelerator pedal.
This may soon change according to Elon Musk’s latest tweet. The original tweeter asked that since the driver’s are still the ones responsible and in control of the vehicle if they could have the option to tell the car to go faster than 5 MPH above the speed limit, especially when speed limits are sometimes incorrectly marked in Tesla’s database.
Elon agreed with him with a simple “Sure.” This isn’t to say you’ll be able to have the car go any speed you’d like on a backroad, but it surely would be appreciated to be able to use AutoPilot on backroads without causing traffic behind you.
Tesla recently released the ability to recognize speed limit signs with the car’s cameras instead of solely relying on their database of speed limits. It’s possible we may see this feature tied to this additional information or to using the user’s set speed to help determine the reliability of the speed limit sign detected.
