Tesla has offered the ability to grant someone temporary access to your Tesla through their 'Add a Driver' feature on their website for a while now. However, now you'll have quick access to it directly from your Tesla app.
We reported earlier this month that this option was coming to the Tesla app in the near future. Tesla added code and assets to support the feature in one of their recent app updates.
The Add a Driver feature is now live and available directly in the Tesla app. The feature is meant to give someone temporary access to your vehicle, instead of adding giving permanent access like you would a spouse or family member.
You can access the Add a Driver feature under the Security portion of the Tesla app. If you already use the Add a Driver feature on Tesla's website, this will include the same information you see on the web.
This is a useful feature that could be used when lending, borrowing or renting a Tesla. The Add a Driver feature lets you add up to five drivers, without giving them access to your Tesla account.
The individual being added will be sent a link via your method of choice. They will need to create a Tesla account and download the Tesla app in order to have access.
As the owner, you will be able to manage any temporary access through your Tesla app. The individual being offered access will have 24 hours to accept the invite and you will be able to cancel or revoke access at any point.
